In derselben Ordnung ist die Philosophie und ihr Denken nur mit der Dichtung. Aber Dichten und Denken sind wiederum nicht das gleiche. Vom Nichts zu reden, bleibt für die Wissenschaft allezeit ein Greuel und eine Sinnlosigkeit. Dagegen vermag dies außer dem Philosophen der Dichter - und zwar nicht deshalb, weil es in der Dichtung nach der Meinung des Alltagsverstandes weniger streng zugeht, sondern weil in der Dichtung (gemeint ist nur die echte und große) eine wesenhafte Überlegenheit des Geistes gegenüber aller bloßen Wissenschaft waltet. Aus solcher Überlegenheit spricht der Dichter immer so, als werde das Seiende erstmals aus - und angesprochen. Im Dichten des Dichters und im Denken des Denkers wird immer soviel Weltraum ausgespart, daß darin ein jeglich Ding, ein Baum, ein Berg, ein Haus, ein Vogelruf die Gleichgültigkeit und Gewöhnlichkeit ganz verliert.

Solo la Poesia appartiene al medesimo ordine della Filosofia e del suo modo di pensare. Ma il poetare e il pensare non sono a loro volta identici. Parlare del nulla seguita a essere, comunque, per la scienza, un errore e un’assurdità. Può farlo, al contrario, oltre che il filosofo, il poeta: e questo non per via di un minor rigore che, secondo l’opinione comune, è dato riscontrare nella poesia, ma perché nella poesia (s’intende solo nella più autentica e più grande) sussiste, nei confronti di tutto ciò che è puramente scientifico, un’essenziale superiorità di spirito. In virtù di tale superiorità il poeta parla sempre come se per la prima volta egli esprimesse e interpellasse l’assente. Nel poetare del poeta come nel pensare del pensatore vengono ad aprirsi così grandi spazi che ogni singola cosa: un albero, una montagna, una casa, un grido d’uccello, vi perde completamente il proprio carattere insignificante e abituale.

Only poetry is of the same order as philosophical thinking, although thinking and poetry are not identical. Talking about Nothing remains forever an abomination and an absurdity for science. But aside from the philosopher, the poet can also talk about Nothing - and not because the procedure of poetry, in the opinion of everyday understanding, is less rigorous, but because, in comparison to all mere science, an essential superiority of the spirit holds sway in poetry (only genuine and great poetry is meant). Because of this superiority, the poet always speaks as if beings were expressed and addressed for the first time. In the poetry of the poet and in the thinking of the thinker, there is always so much world space to spare that each and every thing - a tree, a mountain, a house, the call of a bird - completely loses its indifference and familiarity.
