Hauptmangel der tätigen Menschen. – Den Tätigen fehlt gewöhnlich die höhere Tätigkeit: ich meine die individuelle. Sie sind als Beamte, Kaufleute, Gelehrte, das heißt als Gattungswesen tätig, aber nicht als ganz bestimmte einzelne und einzige Menschen; in dieser Hinsicht sind sie faul. – Es ist das Unglück der Tätigen, daß ihre Tätigkeit fast immer ein wenig unvernünftig ist. Man darf zum Beispiel bei dem geldsammelnden Bankier nach dem Zweck seiner rastlosen Tätigkeit nicht fragen: sie ist unvernünftig. Die Tätigen rollen, wie der Stein rollt, gemäß der Dummheit der Mechanik. – Alle Menschen zerfallen, wie zu allen Zeiten so auch jetzt noch, in Sklaven und Freie; denn wer von seinem Tage nicht zwei Drittel für sich hat, ist ein Sklave, er sei übrigens wer er wolle: Staatsmann, Kaufmann, Beamter, Gelehrter.

Anzeichen höherer und niederer Kultur
Principale difetto degli uomini attivi. - Agli uomini attivi di solito fa difetto l'attività più alta: voglio dire quella individuale. Essi sono attivi come funzionari, commercianti, dotti, cioè come esseri generici, non come uomini affatto determinati, singoli, unici; sotto questo punto di vista sono pigri. È la disgrazia degli attivi, il fatto che la loro attività sia quasi sempre un po' insensata. Non si può ad esempio chiedere, al banchiere che ammucchia denaro, lo scopo di quella sua incessante attività: essa è insensata. Gli attivi rotolano come rotola la pietra, con meccanica stupidità. Tutti gli uomini si dividono, in ogni tempo e anche oggi, in schiavi e liberi: chi infatti non ha per sé i due terzi della sua giornata, è uno schiavo, qualunque cosa sia, politico, commerciante, funzionario, dotto.

Main deficiency of active people. Active men are usually lacking in higher activity - I mean individual activity. They are active as officials, businessmen, scholars, that is, as generic beings, but not as quite particular, single and unique men. In this respect they are lazy. It is the misfortune of active men that their activity is almost always a bit irrational. For example, one must not inquire of the money-gathering banker what the purpose for his restless activity is: it is irrational. Active people roll like a stone, conforming to the stupidity of mechanics. Today as always, men fall into two groups: slaves and free men. Whoever does not have two-thirds of his day for himself, is a slave, whatever he may be: a statesman, a businessman, an official, or a scholar.
