Denn die Kunst ist eine Tochter der Freyheit, und von der Nothwendigkeit der Geister, nicht von der Nothdurft der Materie will sie ihre Vorschrift empfangen. Jetzt aber herrscht das Bedürfniß, und beugt die gesunkene Menschheit unter sein tyrannisches Joch. Der Nutzen ist das große Idol der Zeit, dem alle Kräfte frohnen und alle Talente huldigen sollen. Auf dieser groben Waage hat das geistige Verdienst der Kunst kein Gewicht, und, aller Aufmunterung beraubt, verschwindet sie von dem lermenden Markt des Jahrhunderts.

L'Arte è infatti figlia della libertà e desidera ricevere la sua norma dalla necessità degli spiriti, non dall'indigenza della materia. Ora, però, il bisogno domina e curva sotto il suo giogo tirannico l'umanità decaduta. È l'utile il grande idolo del tempo, che tutte le forze devono servire e tutti i talenti omaggiare. Su questa rozza bilancia il merito spirituale dell'Arte non ha peso alcuno ed essa, privata di ogni incoraggiamento, scompare dal chiassoso mercato dell'epoca.

For Art is a daughter of Freedom, and must receive her commission from the needs of spirits, not from the exigency of matter. But today Necessity is master, and bends a degraded humanity beneath its tyrannous yoke. Utility is the great idol of the age, to which all powers must do service and all talents swear allegiance. In these clumsy scales the spiritual service of Art has no weight; deprived of all encouragement, she flees from the noisy mart of our century.
